Striped Mullet at the NCMFC Meeting This Week
The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) is meeting this week in Emerald Isle to vote on approval of the striped mullet draft Amendment 2 to go out for public scoping. In this draft the NC Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) has recommended the maximum percent reduction of 35.4% despite concerns from fishermen in all sectors that such an extreme reduction is not necessary.
The DMF recommends:
A 50 pound trip limit Saturday and Sunday year round. A 50 pound trip limit November 16th – January 31st. A 500 pound trip limit February 1st – October 15th. And a roe mullet season from October 16th – November 15th with no trip limit.
If this draft is approved it will require a 2/3 majority vote from the MFC to override the DMF recommendation. If you DO NOT agree with this proposal you need to be at this meeting giving public comment. Let the MFC and the DMF know what you are seeing on the water and how this will affect you and your family. Tell them this document is not acceptable as is.
This is the best time to stop this! This proposal does not have to be so restrictive!
The meeting will be held at the Islander Hotel and Resort in Emerald Isle, NC at:
102 Islander Drive, Emerald Isle, NC 28594
In person public comment will be held:
Wednesday, November 15th at 6:00pm and Thursday, November 16th at 9:00am
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.
