Weekly Update From NCFA

While summer is traditionally a slow time for fisheries meetings and regulatory amendments, the North Carolina Fisheries Association continues to stay busy.

Over the past several months, NCFA has worked to ensure the voices of North Carolina’s commercial fishermen are being heard at every level.

Our Chairman, Brent Fulcher, has represented our fishermen in Washington, D.C., on numerous occasions, including two recent visits to the White House. He has also participated in discussions surrounding the creation of the new USDA Office of Seafood, an important step toward recognizing seafood as an essential part of American food production.

Closer to home, NCFA has met with legislators and candidates seeking election and reelection, inviting them to visit our fishing communities and hear directly from the men and women who harvest America’s seafood. These meetings give policymakers the opportunity to see firsthand the challenges facing our communities and better understand the importance of protecting our fisheries, working waterfronts, and domestic seafood production.

At the same time, we continue to expand our efforts to reach the public through our social media campaign—and the response continues to exceed our expectations. One of our recent videos surpassed 100,000 views, and collectively our content has now generated nearly half a million views. While many comments have been supportive of our videos and the facts we are sharing, others continue to reflect misinformation and talking points from opposing groups, reinforcing the importance of engaging with the public and providing accurate information about our fisheries and the families who depend on them.

These efforts are all part of the same mission: building relationships, educating the public, and ensuring that fishermen have a seat at the table wherever decisions affecting our communities are made.
