Flounder, Social and Economics, Tilefish, Black Sea Bass

The final Advisory Committee (AC) meeting regarding Amendment 4 to the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan (FMP) will be held this week. This amendment has only one action item, whether to shift the flounder allocation one year early to a 50/50 parity for 2025 instead of 60/40 for 2025 and then shift to 50/50 for the 2026 fishing year as was originally outlined in Amendment 3.

If the state truly wants fishermen to have more access to Southern Flounder we need to be looking at how to increase access for both sectors.

Recreational, charter-for-hire, and commercial fishers need to sit down together with DMF and start having some open honest conversations about what is working and what can be improved upon with all aspects of fisheries management, not just Southern flounder.

This will be the last chance to give in person public comment on this issue. Written public comment on this issue can be submitted online or mailed before April 30th.
